Congratulations on researching investing in your future! Investing your money in any type of investment should be a decision made by you for the benefit of you and your family. During my career, I have seen it all as it relates to how financial advisors assist their clients. In my opinion, it is great you are reading this article - your interest in this topic most likely means you have an interest in financial markets or researching how to invest.
OK now what?
I suggest you keep on researching and learn as much as you can. If financial markets and investments really interest you, keep exploring and growing your knowledge. As my father always said, “Data is key.” What he meant by that statement was simply, it can’t hurt to have as much information on any subject as possible, it can only help you in making an informed decision. Now just like any other major financial decision you will make throughout your life, such as purchasing a car or a home, these decisions are often complicated and contain a lot of variables that need to consider before making the final purchase.
Consider Robert Greene’s idiom “jack of the trades, master of none” for a moment. No one can expect to completely understand all aspects of everything we do in life. Take me for example, I am considered one of the top investment managers in the nation as it pertains to the rate of return my investments generate. So, you can say I am a master of equity investing. But does that make me a master at everything? Most certainly not! I recently went to the dentist and had to have two teeth removed, when the oral surgeon asked if I was replacing the two teeth I naturally said yes, not knowing the average cost to replace a tooth is $10,000, which in my case my total cost to replace my teeth will be $20,000. Unfortunately for me, I am now missing two teeth. The moral of this story is I am not expected to have all the knowledge equivalent to an oral surgeon, but it would have been nice if I researched my situation ahead of time so to better understand my options and possibly make a more informed decision. Same goes for you and that’s why gathering knowledge in investing is a very good idea, but I strongly suggest you do not venture into investing your hard-earned money without the guidance of a professional.
Did you ever notice articles written by large financial institutions with phrases such as, “What hurdles do women face” or “How women feel about their finance” or “Advice tailored towards women for investing in today's equity markets?” It should not matter what percentage of women invest, what types of investments women across the country invest in.., these types of statements are often presented by large institutions to entice ‘more women’ investors to their institutions so as to grow their bottom line. When you see a bunch of statistics not relating to an investment but general in nature, the statistic was generated for the purposes of determining how much capital should be spent on attracting women investors to their firms. It’s more about growing their market share than providing sound investment advice and options.
What you should be asking is how to invest in today’s equity market to help secure your financial future while increasing your peace of mind? The best way to invest is to know why you are investing. Ignore the big institutions; questions above- rather, determine FOR YOURSELF what your objectives are, and why YOU are investing. Take those two questions (why and objectives) and tailor them to yourself. Those aren’t hurdles, they are OPPORTUNITIES!
